An atypical variant of Ewing's sarcoma, located in the left hip of a nine-year-old girl, is discussed at optical, histochemical and electron microscopical level. The endothelial appearing cells seem to play a main role in its histogenesis. Tumoral cells of an undifferentiated blastemic nature show round nuclei and bright lucent cytoplasm, being organized in solid sheets or vascular-like profiles. Alkaline and acid phosphatases are very prominent in all tumoral cells, and some of them also show PAS positive material. Fibro-osteo-cemental lesions of the jaw bones are a heterogeneous group of diseases which present problems in classification. Psammous desmo-osteoblastoma is one of four newly proposed entities (Makek 1983) and has until now been characterized by its light microscopic, clinical and radiological features. On electron microscopy this tumour exhibits fibroblastic (preosteoblastic), osteoblastic and osteocytic cells and a globular mineralization unlike the mineralization of the psammoma bodies. SPARC oppositely regulates inflammation and fibrosis in bleomycin-induced lung damage.

Fibrosis results from inflammatory tissue damage and impaired regeneration. In the context of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis, we demonstrated that the matricellular protein termed secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) distinctly regulates inflammation and collagen deposition, depending on its cellular origin. Reciprocal Sparc(-/-) and wild-type (WT) bone marrow chimeras revealed that SPARC expression in host fibroblasts is required and sufficient to induce collagen fibrosis in a proper inflammatory environment. To compare the sensitivity and specificity of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma family of tumors (ESFTs) and other small round-cell tumors (SRCTs) in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue assembled in tissue microarrays (TMAs). Epitheloid Hemangioendothelioma of the Scalp

A case of an epitheloid hemangioendothelioma of the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the scalp is described. Clinically and histologically a (metastatic) carcinoma had been considered in differential diagnosis. Of great help in recognition of the endothelial nature of this tumor was the immunohistochemical reaction with Factor-VIII associated antigen and Ulex europaeus antigen. Not only tumor cells in solid areas, but also intracytoplasmic vacuoles revealed positive staining. Thereby it could be shown, that this paranuclear vacuoles are actually compatible with developing capillary lumina. New cell lines of gastric and pancreatic cancer: distinct morphology, growth characteristics, expression of epithelial and immunoregulatory antigens.

Two new cell lines from stomach cancers and one from a pancreatic carcinoma are presented. MZ-GC-1 was established from a hepatic metastasis of a well differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma. MZ-GC-2 was derived from ascites induced by a poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma. MZ-PC-1 originated from the pleural effusion of a moderately well differentiated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. MZ-GC-1 cells were adherent and partially polarized, connected tightly via desmosomes. In contrast MZ-GC-2 cells consisted of slightly adherent or floating subpopulations and displayed no desmosomes. Clinicopathologic and DNA Flow Cytometric Analysis of Eighty-three Renal Cell Carcinomas

The clinical and anatomopathologic features as well as DNA content of 83 renal cell carcinomas were analyzed. The possible interrelationship and prognostic value of these factors were also considered. The DNA study has been performed by flow cytometry using paraffin-embedded tissues. In each case an internal control with nonneoplastic renal tissue obtained in the same nefrectomy was also done in order to calculate the DNA index. Differences in patient age, nuclear grade, and mitotic activity were related with outcome; however, this relationship was not confirmed by the Cox test. Notch signalling is off and is uncoupled from HES1 expression in Ewing's sarcoma

Notch can act as an oncogene or as a tumour suppressor and thus can either promote or inhibit tumour cell growth. To establish Notch status in Ewing's sarcoma family of tumours (ESFT), we investigated the Notch pathway by gene expression profiling meta-analysis or immunohistochemistry in samples obtained from 96 and 24 ESFT patients, respectively. We found that although Notch receptors were highly expressed, Notch did not appear to be active, as evidenced by the absence of Notch receptors in cell nuclei.
